Founded in the year 1970, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), also known as the National University of Malaysia, was founded to maintain the Malay language to be used as the main language for education.
There are 3 main campuses in Malaysia - the main campus is located at Bangi, the medical campus is located in Cheras and the international campus is located in Kuala Lumpur.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has won several awards such as the Prime Minister’s Quality Award back in the year 2006, showcasing its consistent efforts to offer quality education to both local and international students. The Malay language is also being taught to international students.
Under QS World University Rankings, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is ranked #159 and #30 in the Asia category. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia also maintains a close partnership with several universities in other countries such as the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia also managed to achieve 5 Stars (Rated for Excellence) under the QS World University Rankings and formed close relationships with several business partners in China, Brunei, the Middle East, and Indonesia. This helps to offer students better quality education as well as more opportunities for employment upon successful graduation.
Besides that, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has earned the title of Research University (RU) as they prioritise quality of research and publication. Some of the notable research institutions under Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia are the Institute of Climate Change, the Fuel Cell Institute and the Solar Energy Research Institute.
The campus of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is known as a sustainable and green campus. This also includes an added focus on all things energy-related, such as biotechnology and earth sciences.
Additionally, one of the notable alumni from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia would be Malaysia’s first astronaut, which is Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor. Besides that, other famous alumni include popular singer Jess Lee and former deputy prime minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has up to 13 different faculties, 11 centres and 13 research institutes. The library, which is called the Tun Seri Lanang Library, is known as one of the largest libraries in Malaysia, including a few different branches such as the Malay World, Law Library, Civilisation Library, and UKM Medical Centre Library.
There are also several sports and recreation facilities such as the Danau Golf Club, which is an 18-hole golf course as well as a gymnasium, snooker tables, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Students can also enjoy several outdoor courts to play sports such as badminton, sepak takraw and football.
As for the student accommodation at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for international students, there are on-campus and off-campus accommodations available. The on-campus accommodation is referred to as ‘asrama’ or ‘kolej’ in the Malay language and is located around the campus. The facilities such as the bathrooms and kitchens are shared among the students. If international students wish to go for off-campus accommodation, it will be more expensive as they are located outside of the campus and may not have shared facilities.
There are also numerous student organisations or clubs for students to join which are related to sports, social welfare, culture and more. The food options are plenty - consisting of various Chinese, Malay and Indian local cuisines.
To date, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has more than 17,500 undergraduate students and 5,105 postgraduate students - with at least 1,368 consisting of international students from over 35 countries.
