9. Pay for your Student Visa Fees

10. Your documents will be sent by the university for your Visa

Once the fees are paid, the university will forward your documents to the Malaysian authorities for Student Visa approval. Typically, this process takes 4-8 weeks. 

Therefore, prompt fee payment is crucial to prevent delays in obtaining your electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL). Failure to receive it on time could disrupt your schedule.

11. Get your Electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL) 

Upon approval of your Student Visa, you’ll receive an email notification. Armed with the approval letter, you’re ready to embark on your journey to study in Malaysia.

Do you need to take IELTS or TOEFL for English language proficiency? 

You don’t need to take these tests if: 

• You have qualifications for any of these: IGCSE O-Level, GCE A-Level, IB, CBSE
• You’ve learned English during your previous education. However, for this case, you’ll need a letter given by the previous schools to show proof that you’ve learned them in English. 

You need to take the tests if: 

• You don’t meet any of the requirements stated above. 
• But you may also take these tests at the English centre offered by any language institutes or universities in Malaysia. 

Though each university has its requirements for English proficiency, it’s best to score a minimum of 5.0 for IELTS or 70 for TOEFL. However, certain specific programs such as medicine, law, and branch campuses may require a higher score.

How To Apply for Student Visa in Malaysia

Here is the rough process to get a Student Visa when you plan to study in Malaysia:

Step 1: Get Accepted by a Malaysian Institution

Apply and get accepted by a Malaysian educational institution recognized by the government.

On average, you’ll spend around RM500 to RM1,200 each month for food and other grocery expenses. 

Accommodation

Internationals have two options for accommodation:

• On-campus: There are dorms or hostels in Malaysian universities. There are shared rooms or single rooms. Students are expected to share facilities with others. The average price would be around RM400 to RM1,500 per month.
• Off-campus: There are various shared landed houses, apartments and condominiums available in different locations. The average price would be around RM500 to RM2,500 per month.

Transportation

Students can travel by public transport such as MRT, LRT, KTM or bus. There are also e-hailing services available such as Grab. The average cost would be around RM100 to RM200 per month. 

Healthcare

International students can engage with health insurance by insurance providers in partnership with the universities in Malaysia. Most of the health insurance plans include accident or hospital coverage. 

Internet & Utilities

The average utility bills such as water, gas or electricity depend on your accommodation. However, most on-campus accommodations will already include utility bills as part of the monthly rental. For off-campus accommodation, it might average between RM80 to RM200 a month.
